MACKENZIE WOODS

CHOREOGRAPHER & EDUCATOR

About

02 artist statement

As a choreographer, I strive to create a shared and collective experience for the performer, choreographer, and spectator. My work is focused on creating movement possibilities through the process of play. I am drawn to dancers who possess an inner desire to discover and evolve their artistic voice.  As an educator, I am a firm believer that dancers and teachers should always be in a state of discovery. My goal is to cultivate an environment that creates connections with the self and others, evokes meaningful experiences, and invites positivity.

" Mrs. Woods is an amazing teacher. Not only did she educate me on dance, but she also taught me about discipline, self-confidence, determination, and patience. Her encouragement motivated me to go to dance class every day and work as hard as I could. She taught me how to cultivate new skills, unfamiliar ideas, and be patient with myself in the process. Mrs. Woods was the most influential teacher that I had and her influence has helped me to be the strong, independent person that I want to be."

"Teachers like Mrs. Woods help us understand the world, the struggles, and the reason to keep pushing. I have been a dancer of Mrs. Woods for about 5 years. From the moment I met her, my life has truly changed. She is more than a dance teacher. In fact, Her dances are more than just choreography. They are lessons and directions for the rest of our lives....I appreciate her process. It helps me today. I appreciate Mrs. Woods for helping me have an open mind and seeing the good within the struggles."

"My experience with Mrs. Woods was amazing! Without her drive to help her students, I wouldn't have discovered my true passion. While being her student, she was always professional and created an awesome environment to learn. Not only did she help me get to the next level in dance, she created a great bond with her students. To this day, I still see her as an awesome mentor and a person I feel comfortable talking to.

"Starting off, I was a really shy girl-crying in front of my peers every time I performed or presented something kind of gal. I was just really insecure and scared of what people would think of me. No matter how much I practiced I still felt like I wasn't perfect, but I realized that dance isn't about being perfect. It's about moving with purpose and feeling the music. Throughout the years, I have gained a very close relationship with Mrs. Woods and it has taught me many things: how to love myself, how to give myself positive affirmations, and the ability to translate this new found confidence into my dancing. The more I danced, the more passion, love, and confidence I had. Suddenly, I was becoming a whole new person. I was excited to perform. I didn't care what people would think when I would improv. I was becoming outgoing and I have Mrs. Woods to thank for that. "
